What’s the Easiest Way to End a Friendship?
Do absolutely nothing.
As we get older, it’s completely understandable that our priorities in life change. In turn, our network of friends shrink and we often tend to make less time for the people or things that aren’t as high up on our to-do list. Sometimes, we ignore these people knowingly, even our closest friends, without any hint of guilt or shame.
Just like the fizzling out part of the initial stages of dating a someone new whom we don’t feel a connection with, friendships also have a similar deterioration process. It may not be as swift or as sudden, but the actions that are taken (or lack thereof) are nearly the same.
Friendships, and relationships in general, require work from both sides. If one side is picking up the slack while the other fails to take any initiative, then there may still be hope yet. However, if nothing is being done on either side, it’s a surefire loss.
It’s a stalemate. There is neither any gain, nor is there any loss. But, in the end, no one really wins. After a while, the game is eventually abandoned or forgotten all together if no immediate action is taken.
As the saying goes, actions speak louder than words.
When it comes to the people in our lives who matter the most to us, it’s important that we make a conscious and continuous effort to show them that we still care. Otherwise, it can become all too easy to allow those people whom we care about to slip away on the shores that harbor the many other areas and responsibilities in our lives.
Sometimes, doing nothing is the worst thing that you can do.
In life, doing nothing can end up being the most effective and the most absolute way to solidify the extinction of any friendship or relationship. But, who can blame us though, right? As we all know, that’s how life goes sometimes — People walk in and out of our lives every day.
Though, if you truly care about someone; if you truly want to preserve the longevity of the friendships or relationships that matter in your life, then you have to make it work. You have to do the work. You have to take action. You have to make it last. You have to work at it even when you are too tired, even if don’t want to or if you don’t feel like it.
To be successful at anything in life, action is always required. Doing nothing only seals your fate. Doing nothing is the inevitable demise of any goal.
So, whether it’s a matter of maintaining a friendship or achieving your own personal goal, just know that you can’t sit around and simply hope that things will all work out. You have to do something about it — That part is up to you.
