What Making the Bed Each Morning Has Done for My Productivity

The simple act of making my bed has aligned the rest of my good habits with one another

One of the first things I do each single morning is make the bed almost immediately after I wake up. I squeeze in a few small things before then —like go to the bathroom or pour myself a cup of coffee — but, for the most part, my bed is made before I even sit down to eat my breakfast, or log onto my laptop, to start work, or do anything of any real significance.

I’m not sure why, but I physically can’t proceed with my day without having the bed made. It’s become as innate of a habit to me as brushing my teeth is each day.

Growing up, my Mother made my bed for me every single morning. I never asked her to, she would just do it without hesitation. She would quietly sneak into my room while I’m in the bathroom or while I’m at the table eating breakfast and subtly make my bed. Then, by the time I got back to my room, I’d be pleased to see that it was already made.

I can’t say for sure whether it was intentional or not — to get me to finally start making the bed myself or if it was purely out out of the kindness of her heart — but, I can say that the consequence of this action has resulted in the former. Because now in…
