When we break down the timeline of our lives — It’s really just a series of years which are made up of days, which are made up of hours, which are made up of minutes, which are made up of seconds.
In essence, it seems as though time rules our entire lives. But, as the saying goes,
“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away”
Time is a funny thing though, isn’t it?
It always ends up being that whenever you need more of it, there isn’t enough and whenever you have too much of it, you don’t know what to do with it.
But, the thing is, sometimes the shortest moments of time can actually have the greatest impact on our lives.
I live in New York City, where time is always of the essence. Every single minute is important because sometimes, just a few short minutes can change the course of your entire day.
A matter of five minutes could be all that it takes to make someone thirty minutes to an hour late. And leaving thirty minutes early can really just put you right on time. It doesn’t make all too much sense.
What’s even worse?
There are times when consistency doesn’t even matter. You can stick to a time that you leave for work every day and still be late because you would never have been able to foresee the factors that are outside of your control.
What if the train is delayed?
What if the train breaks down?
What if the trains are rerouted?
All of these things are things that you can’t predict and are beyond your control.
And all you can do is dictate the time you leave, not the time when you arrive. And five minutes could make all the difference
In life, there are moments that define us. There are moments that are still a mystery to us. There are moments that begin particularly ordinary, but end up being the most memorable.
And we can never know when these moments will come — just like that train we are waiting for.
So, keep your eyes open. Be on the lookout for those moments that could change the course of your day, or life.
Will it be the moment a relationship ends?
Will it be the moment we say, “I love you”?
Will it be the moment we decide to quit?
Will it be the moment we decide to begin?
If you recognize it, don’t take it for granted. Life is too short for that. Those few short minutes, that brief moment could be the one that stays with you forever.
