Like other living creatures in this world, we‘re accustomed to the environment in which we were raised. In our given environment, we are faced with many factors that ultimately shape who we become.
We create shelter, which we eventually call our home. We maintain a certain diet, which can be contingent upon location and culture. We adopt a community of peers, which can vary based on common interests and beliefs.
But, unlike other living creatures, humans do not necessarily need to be confined to the environment from which we were raised. We can choose to go elsewhere. We can choose to relocate. We can travel far distances across the globe.
We can inhabit other places — other cities, other states, other countries. We can learn about other cultures, other beliefs.
However, many of us tend to do quite the opposite — We tend to stay in one place. We never leave, never relocate, never learn about things outside of our own reality.
But, the thing we must know —the thing we must do in order to thrive somewhere else — is we must learn to adapt to change.
Without change, we cannot grow. And we cannot grow unless we place ourselves outside of our comfort zone — bring ourselves to be somewhere new, somewhere we’ve never been.
Many of us are so bent on keeping things exactly the same as they’ve always been. We fear what would come of change. We don’t want to be in that uncomfortable stage of the unknown.
“If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you” — Fred DeVito
What we don’t realize is that the only constant in this world is that things are always changing around us, even if we don’t choose to accept or embrace it.
We experience changes in the environment that we are already in — changes in weather, the change in seasons, a new day, a new month, a new year. We experience change in the growth of our cities, our states, our countries. And with all of the change that occurs around us, we don’t realize the change that happens within us as well.
Every day we grow new cells, develop new thoughts. We grow up, we grow old, and we hopefully become a little wiser than we were before. But, we must understand that change is necessary in order to grow.
A flower doesn’t bloom without the help of the elements that surround it. It embraces the elements and grows through those conditions.
We must continue on our journey of personal growth. We must continue to adapt to change. We must continue to seek out new experiences and new learnings. We must do so because it is in our nature. It is how we thrive, how we grow.
“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” — Eleanor Roosevelt
