It’s 5:30pm on a Monday night and I just finished work. I’m in my kitchen with my nine-month old daughter who’s sitting, playing in her activity center.

I’m juggling between making her apple-carrot puree while simultaneously coating frozen fish in breadcrumbs and cooking mushroom risotto on the stove for myself.

My husband is working late, so it’s just the two of us for the next few hours.

After we’ve finished eating dinner, I clean up while my daughter watches me like a miniature lifeguard sitting in her high chair. Once the dishes are put in the dishwasher and the table is wiped down, I take her for a quick walk in the stroller before giving her a bath, changing her into pajamas, and giving her a bottle before bedtime.

This is a typical weeknight at my house and I’m sure that many other families can paint a similar picture.

Although this particular night seems relatively dull and uneventful, there are many other nights that don’t go as smoothly because well, children can be wildly unpredictable.
