I actually have visited the Philippines back in 2015 — It was an amazing experience and I was not at all treated poorly at all, but instead, was actually more admired because of the fact that I was American.
You should definitely visit Japan (if you haven’t already) and even visit family (if you can) because it’s important to see where your ancestors came from It was an eye-opening experience for me to see where my family grew up and it made me more appreciative of what I have in America.
I think that my experiences in other Asian countries would be more advantageous for me in comparison to European countries because I think I’d feel more of a sense of “outsider-ness” in Europe since it’s dominantly white. Even visiting the middle states in the US can be a little awkward because certain states have very little diversity.
It will definitely be a very very long time before this whole feeling of racial inferiority will go away for minorities, but definitely speaking and writing about it is what will create more openness on the issue.
