How Do You Say “No” to Work When Work Won’t Say “No” to You?

The show must go on in the world of digital advertising

I’ve been working in digital advertising for nearly a decade now and if there’s one over-arching, all-encompassing lesson I’ve learned since then, it’s that the dollar never sleeps. But, I guess that’s to be expected in the digital world.

Even as I lay in bed writing this article, I’m literally tossing and turning at the thought of catching up on the countless number of things that have happened since I last closed my laptop. Because despite my off-the-clock hours, the work still continues on without me, silently waiting for my return.

The dollars are still spending whether I’m there to watch it happen or not. And I suppose that’s the thing that really keeps me up at night — the fact that work never really stops in the world of digital advertising even when I’m fast asleep.

Throughout Thanksgiving Day, slack notifications still pinged my phone every few minutes despite my away status that was so obviously paired with a “do not disturb” emoji. Emails still poured in regardless of my out-of-office email reply — as if a snoozed notification setting or mere automated email reply could ever be a real barrier for the persistent follow-ups emails or “I’m so sorry to disturb you”
