Last week, I received the news that I had been desperately waiting to hear after a little over four months of unemployment. I was finally offered a job for a company that I actually wanted to work for.

After getting laid off at the end of June, I spent a majority of my weeks of applying to a countless number of jobs. My daily morning routine eventually became fairly predictable. I would open up my laptop, scour through dozens of pages of the “Jobs” section on LinkedIn, save any job listings that I found either relevant or appealing, then fire away on submitting application after application.

I made slight tweaks to alter my resume and cover letter depending on the job listing and the number of responses (of lack thereof) that I’d receive, then I’d start the entire process all over again. Each day, I would constantly refresh my Gmail inbox as I eagerly awaited an update on my application status. Then, each day it would be a mixed bag consisting of either complete radio silence or back-to-back auto-rejection e-mails that almost always followed the same exact template.
